Compost school videos available.Composting Video Order Form  

All students enrolled in the school will receive a composite video of the  complete Composting Video Series listed below as part of their Registration package. These videos show various agriculture, municipal and commercial compost projects. The projects described in the videos were conducted by the Maine Compost Team to demonstrate the feasibility of handling various organic wastes by composting. Each video describes in detail the process involved and the cooperation needed to establish the composting operation.
     
These videos are available for non students and may be purchased individually for $10.00 each or as an entire set of individual tapes for $75.00. A single tape with all videos is available for $15.00.  Please complete and return the form to receive any or all of the listed videos. 1. Composting Cafeteria & Commercial Food Waste
Shows collection methods for pre and post consumer food wastes, winter composting and seven different composting operations. It demonstrates the use of various equipment for grinding, mixing and turning compost. (Time: 22 minutes)

2. On Farm Composting
Demonstrates how a farmer, using his farm equipment, composted his dairy manure, newspaper bedding and municipal leaves. It also shows how the compost was used in his commercial vegetable garden. (Time: 8 minutes)

3. The Wiscasset School Food Waste Composting
Shows how food waste from a school with 1,300 students was handled and composted. The video also shows how the students were involved in the large scale composting and the course work done with the elementary school children on home and worm composting.

4. The Waterville/Winslow Leaf Recycling Project
This video demonstrates how two towns (population 25,000) worked with a local farmer to compost over 200 tons of leaves with 40 tons of poultry manure.  It shows in detail the steps taken from the first discussion to the use of the compost in a commercial garden.

5. The Blueberry Waste Composting Project
Shows how a major processor of wild blueberries (20 million pounds) located a site and composted its  wastes to show the industry another way of handling wastes.

6. The Apple Pomace Project
An apple processor composted apple pomace from his cider operation with his town's leaves and yard waste. In addition, local poultry manure and bio ash were used as ingredients. This video chronicles the steps taken to get this "source separated" organic venture underway, underscoring the many benefits to the community and the environment. (Time: 13 minutes)

7. On Farm Composting Equipment
This video shows how farm equipment can be used in medium and large scale composting. It shows how some equipment can be modified mechanically or used for various stages in the composting process. New equipment designed especially for composting is introduced. The video also deals with insurance issues operators should be aware of in a composting operation.

8. Composting Cull Potatoes
This video demonstrates the process for successfully composting cull potatoes in Maine. It shows examples of on-farm and regional compost facilities as an alternative strategy for handling cull potatoes. This video also mentions equipment considerations and costs for six composting operations. (Time: 23 minutes)    

9. Large Animal Carcass Composting
The Maine Compost Team conducted a series of compost trials to address the disposal of large animal carcasses.  This video documents the methods and results of those trials.
