Symposium Rationale

Recent world events have raised the awareness of policy makers, scientists and regulators of the need to develop environmentally acceptable animal carcass disposal methods for both routine and catastrophic mortalities.

Such events include:

•  Foot and Mouth outbreak in the United Kingdom

•  Detection of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in dairy cattle  in Canada and the US.

•  Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak in Thailand and its potential outbreak in North America.

•  Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) of wild animals, primarily deer and  elk, a growing concern throughout the northern US and Canada.

•  Occasional outbreaks of the highly infectious Newcastle Disease (ND) affecting poultry flocks.

•  Natural disasters in agricultural areas that can lead to significant animal death and environmental impact of unattended, decaying carcasses.

•  During the 2004, AI outbreak in British Columbia, a major problem arose when provincial landfills closed their doors to poultry carcass disposal because they hadn't been properly educated and trained to deal with AI risk factors (Stepushyn, 2004).

This symposium will bring together researchers, policy makers, and responders to learn, discuss and evaluate issues, research projects, and policies concerning animal carcass disposal.
